When Enveloped in Tenderness – 優しさに包まれたなら by Yumi Matsutoya・ 松任谷 由実 (ユーミン)

Light like a feather and as free as a bird - Kiki and Jiji swing up into lofty heights, accompanied by a group of seagulls.

KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE (魔女の宅急便・まじょのたっきゅうびん), I haven’t seen the movie myself yet, I guess I should catch up on that eventually. For the song, I picked it up by sheer chance when watching Japanese television. It was the background music of a SANTORY non-alcohol drink advertisement ;).

Here the ad (😢 unfortunately nowhere available anymore on the net, pardon):

I actually never thought that I would translate song lyrics, as I usually also don’t pay a great deal attention to the texts in English. Songs appeal to me in a first instance through rhythm and melody. The lyrics naturally come to my awareness while listening it a couple times, but it is not something I look up particularly.

For Japanese songs though, it is a bit different, because even when listening them several times over, I can’t quite grasp the entire meaning of the song, just bits and pieces with the vocab available to me. I am more the visual person also when it comes to acquiring language skills, at least for everything that greatly deviates from my mother tongue or English.

I think that kind of kicked it off to look things up in Japanese, plus it makes for a diversified study exercise when time permits. Afterwards I can often visualize the kanji characters I checked for, when the song comes to my ears. Also shadowing the songs would be a good practice towards fluency, but even when alone, I can’t get over that embarrassment hurdle of hearing my own voice rasping those sounds.

YUMING does it a great deal better, please enjoy the ending song as it is beautifully performed by her. A heartwarming and relaxing piece of anime music.

When I was a child there happen to be a spirit

That mysteriously made all my dreams come true

The mornings I wake up with a warm feeling

Even when becoming an adult miracles still happen

I open the curtain and as I am enveloped in the tenderness of calm sunshine streaming through the trees (into the room)** surely

Everything that comes to my eyes (today)** is a message

When I was a child there happen to be a spirit

Every day it bestowed me with (its)** love

The precious box forgotten tucked away deep inside my heart the time to open it up is now

In the garden after a rain shower and as I am enveloped in the tenderness of the (fresh and pleasant)** smell of the jasmine flower (around me)** surely

Everything that comes to my eyes is a message

I open the curtain and as I am enveloped in the tenderness of calm sunshine filtering through the trees surely

Everything that comes to my eyes is a message
